SQL-Ledger, feature by feature, against the QuickBooks ladder

Chapters 1 to 4 asked what QuickBooks has that we lack. This chapter asks the opposite: for every screen in the SQL-Ledger menu and every addition Ledger123 has made, which is the lowest QuickBooks Online tier that offers it — and which have no tier at all. It is the page to hand a prospect who is choosing a plan.

2026-08-26 · tiers and prices as of 1 August 2026: Simple Start $38, Essentials $85, Plus $140, Advanced $340

5.1How to read the tables

Each row is a menu entry from menu.ini, or a capability that lives inside one, in the order the menu presents them. The mark is the cheapest tier at which QuickBooks Online does substantially the same thing; where QuickBooks does it in a weaker form the note says so. No tier means not in QuickBooks Online at any price, including Advanced; Add-on means sold separately (payroll, payments, the inventory add-on).

Plate 5.1 · What no QuickBooks Online tier has

Grouped, so the list reads as what it is — the shape of a firm QuickBooks was not designed for.

  • Making things: assemblies with bills of material, labour and overhead absorbed into them, stock assembly, jobs with stores cards and finished goods, work orders.
  • Moving things: warehouses and transfers, partial shipment and backorders, serial numbers, lots and expiry dates, barcodes, vendor part numbers and lead times, a requirements report, RFQs, consolidation of orders and invoices, a queue for printing.
  • Selling over a counter or a website: point of sale with workstations, a storefront on the same stock, credit limits enforced at entry.
  • Trading in more than one language or country: the interface in thirty languages, documents in the customer’s language, translated item descriptions and accounts, per-user number and date formats, payroll tables you define for your own jurisdiction, GIFI.
  • Owning the books: several AR accounts, editable document templates, the maintenance screens, unlimited users, several companies, the database itself, and the source code.

5.9How to use this with a prospect

Ask which rows in section 5.7 and Plate 5.1 they need. If the answer is none, chapter 1 is the comparison that matters and the eleven enhancements there are what stands between them and a Simple Start equivalent with more underneath. If the answer is any row at all, there is no QuickBooks plan to compare against, and the conversation is about migration, not parity. Most manufacturing, distribution, multilingual and multi-company prospects are in the second group before they finish reading the plate.

In one sentence

Of the 114 things SQL-Ledger does, 42 are in Simple Start or Essentials, 27 need Plus, Advanced or an add-on, and 45 — the making, moving, multilingual and ownership rows — are not in QuickBooks Online at all.

5.10Sources

The tier assignments rest on the research in chapters 1 to 4, whose sources are listed there; the SQL-Ledger side is menu.ini in the repository and the feature pages at /features.
